The same can be true of the child who becomes tearful before a party, asks the same question repeatedly, or refuses to sleep without a parent nearby. Learning how to support anxious children begins with seeing the feeling beneath the behaviour. Anxiety is not naughtiness, weakness or a problem to be argued away. It is a child’s nervous system trying, often clumsily, to keep them safe.

For parents, particularly during a move, family change or a demanding period at school, this can feel exhausting. You want to reassure your child, but nothing seems to stick. The aim is not to remove every worry from their life. It is to help them feel understood, steady enough to cope, and increasingly confident in their own ability to face difficult moments.

Start with connection, not correction

When anxiety is high, logic rarely lands. A child who is panicking about a school trip does not need to hear that it will definitely be fine before they feel heard. Start by naming what you notice in a calm, simple way: “You seem really worried about tomorrow.” Then make room for their answer, even if it is muddled, repetitive or bigger than the situation appears.

Try not to rush into fixing it. Reassurance has a place, but repeated promises such as “Nothing bad will happen” can accidentally teach a child that they need an adult to make anxiety disappear. A more helpful response is: “I can see this feels scary. We can think about the next small step together.” This tells them both that their feeling is real and that it is manageable.

Children also take cues from the adults around them. That does not mean you need to be perfectly calm at all times. It means being honest without handing them your worry. If you are stressed, pause before responding. A lower voice, slower pace and a few breaths can change the emotional temperature of the room.

How to support anxious children through everyday routines

Anxiety thrives on uncertainty. Predictable routines give children a sense of control when their thoughts feel unpredictable, especially after a house move, a change of school or a period of travelling between countries.

Keep key parts of the day as consistent as you reasonably can: waking, meals, homework, play, bedtime and goodbyes. For younger children, a simple visual plan can make an unfamiliar day feel less overwhelming. For older children, talking through the week ahead may be enough. The goal is not a rigid household. It is a reliable rhythm they can trust.

Bedtime often deserves particular attention. Tiredness can magnify worries, and anxious thoughts tend to arrive when the house becomes quiet. Create a wind-down routine that is soothing rather than stimulating. This might include a bath, a book, a short chat about the day and a familiar phrase before lights out. Avoid turning bedtime into a long negotiation about fears, but do offer a planned time earlier in the evening to talk.

If your child asks the same question again and again, answer warmly once, then gently refer back to the plan. “We have talked about who is collecting you. It is written on the fridge, and I will be there at three.” Consistency is more reassuring than finding a new answer each time.

Help them put words to what is happening

Children do not always say, “I feel anxious.” They may say they are bored, angry, ill or simply do not want to go. They may become clingy, struggle to concentrate, have nightmares or need frequent reassurance. Looking for patterns helps you respond with curiosity rather than frustration.

You can help your child notice the link between thoughts, feelings and body sensations. Ask gentle questions: “Where do you feel the worry in your body?” or “What is your worry saying might happen?” A child may describe butterflies, a racing heart, hot cheeks or a tight chest. Giving anxiety a name, such as “the worry alarm”, can be useful for some younger children because it separates the child from the feeling. They are not the problem. They are having a difficult moment.

It is equally helpful to ask what makes the feeling even slightly easier. They may want a cuddle, a drink of water, a few minutes outside, music, drawing, or a quiet activity. Do not assume the same tool works every time. The point is to build their awareness that feelings move and that they have choices in how to respond.

Build courage in small, realistic steps

Avoidance brings quick relief, which is why it is so tempting. Yet when a child regularly avoids the thing they fear, their brain can receive the message that it really was dangerous. Over time, the worry may grow.

The alternative is not forcing a child into an overwhelming situation. It is gentle, supported practice. If your child is afraid of being away from you, the first step may be ten minutes with a trusted relative rather than a full sleepover. If school mornings are difficult, the first goal may be getting dressed and reaching the gate, with a clear plan agreed alongside staff.

Praise effort, not just outcomes. “You were worried, and you still walked into the classroom” is more powerful than “See, there was nothing to worry about.” The first response teaches courage. It honours the fact that bravery is not the absence of fear but taking a manageable step while fear is present.

There will be setbacks. A difficult morning does not erase progress, and pushing too fast can leave a child feeling defeated. Adjust the step, stay patient and return to what helped before.

Make space for play, movement and belonging

An anxious child’s world can become very small. Play, movement and safe social connection help widen it again. These are not distractions from the problem. They help regulate the body and remind a child that life contains enjoyment, competence and connection as well as worry.

Choose activities that suit your child rather than trying to make them more outgoing. One child may settle after kicking a ball in the park; another may prefer baking, building something, reading beside you or seeing one familiar friend. For families living abroad, belonging may take extra time. Keep ties with trusted people while creating gentle opportunities to connect locally, without making friendship another performance pressure.

Adults can model this too. Let your child see that you can face an uncertain situation, ask for help and recover when plans change. These everyday moments quietly teach resilience.

Know when to seek additional support

Many childhood worries are temporary and respond well to patience, routine and connection. But it is worth speaking to a GP, school pastoral lead, health visitor or qualified child mental health professional if anxiety is persistent, intensifying or interfering with ordinary life. This may include regular school refusal, frequent physical symptoms with no clear medical cause, panic-like episodes, major sleep disruption, withdrawal from friends, or distress that affects the whole family.

Seek urgent professional help if your child talks about hurting themselves, not wanting to be alive, or seems unable to stay safe. You do not have to work this out alone.

Support can look different depending on the child’s age, temperament and circumstances. A child dealing with bereavement, bullying, neurodiversity, family separation or a major relocation may need a more tailored approach. Asking for help is not a sign you have failed. It is a caring decision to bring more support around your child.

Your presence matters more than perfect words. Each time you listen without judgement, hold a calm boundary, and help your child take one small step, you give them something lasting: the experience of feeling worried without feeling alone.

Learn how to support anxious children with calm routines, listening and practical tools – plus signs that it is time to seek professional help if needed.

[1

post-1687","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
